You’ve found your person and have the perfect ring, but how are you going to ask that person to marry you? Forever is quite the commitment and we know that you want this moment to be as special as the question. Forget on planning the typical dinner and a ring scenario and plan a day that is as unique and special as your love story. Cleveland Ohio offers many options including  fantastic backdrops and locations for a truly unforgettable proposal for every couple.

For the Romantics & Nature Enthusiasts

Beautiful Lake Erie Sunset of the Cleveland Skyline.

1. Lake Erie Sunset

Imagine a breathtaking sunset over Lake Erie, the sky ablaze with vibrant colors, as you get down on one knee under Edgewater Park’s iconic willow tree. The park provides stunning panoramic views of both the lake and the Cleveland skyline, making it a truly picturesque and romantic setting. Consider a romantic picnic beforehand, or simply strolling along the beach and talking about your forever until the perfect moment arrives.

Cleveland’s beaches aren’t the only place to find a sunset view as gorgeous as your partner. Cleveland has so many other cool options to view the Lake Erie Sunset. From beaches to views from the Observation Deck at Tower City there are tons of options. We love the idea of our feet in the sand but also a wonderful day out at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or a trip on the Goodtime 3 for a sunset cruise. Fortunately, Cleveland’s beauty can be found wherever you look for it, just like the possibilities for your perfect proposal.

The Frost Exhibit at The Cleveland Botanical Gardens

2. Cleveland Botanical Garden

The Cleveland Botanical Garden offers a great option for winter or plant lovers. For a proposal surrounded by natural beauty and tranquility, the Cleveland Botanical Garden is an exceptional choice. With its diverse indoor and outdoor gardens, including a lush indoor greenhouse, you can find a secluded and beautiful spot to pop the question. If you are planning on getting engaged in the winter, the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Frost exhibit could be particularly magical with its enchanting lights and stunning holiday displays.

Additionally, the Botanical Gardens have so many other options nearby that makes this an ideal place to pop the question. It might seem like you are just out on a date to view the gardens but stroll around University Circle waiting for your perfect moment. Then you can plan a romantic lunch in Little Italy beforehand or a romantic dinner after you pop the question at L’Albatros

Also, planning on photography near the art museum or Wade Circle might be a nice way to commemorate the first step towards your upcoming marriage and double as a perfect announcement to your friends and family.

An epic proposal at Squires Castle.

3. Squire's Castle at North Chagrin Reservation

Transport yourselves to a fairytale by proposing at Squire's Castle. The romantic estate in the North Chagrin Reservation offers a unique and historic backdrop. Here, you can imagine what it was like to live at the castle when it was built in the 1920’s while planning your future with your soon-to-be spouse. Pack a basket with bubbly and their favorite treats for a truly enchanting experience.

There are some really great options to pop the question in the Castle, but many trails in the woods behind the Castle to extend your trip or plan a surprise “hike” before you ask for their hand in forever. Additionally, turning this into a little surprise celebration could be easy as well. The shelters at the park can be rented if you want to have your families join you afterwards and the parking lot is big enough to hide guests cars that your partner would never expect a thing.

A proposal under the Rose Foundation Pavilion.

4. The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes

We love this place for a few reasons. It’s a great option for the nature enthusiasts who want to enjoy the sights and sounds of a nature preserve without having to go on a long and strenuous hike. The Nature Center’s two accessible trails offer access to the Shaker Parklands’ eight mapped natural habitats, four gardens for native plants and insects, and nearly countless birds and other wildlife. The Nature Center is also very close to the heart of Cleveland so you can still have the night life without having a long drive or to sacrifice the ambiance of a ‘in the woods’ type aesthetic.

The opportunities for photography here are wonderful as well. The Rose Foundation Gazebo is one of our favorite places and can be rented for a private elopement or proposal. The Lavelle Family Amphitheater is a very cool space for photos as well, and nearby is a real treehouse for those who like to have a little fun. Additionally there is a pavilion on site you can rent to throw a surprise proposal party with friends or family after you pop the question.

For the Art & Culture Aficionados

Cultured proposal at The Cleveland Museum of Art

1. Cleveland Museum of Art

For the art-loving couples, Cleveland offers an ideal setting for your proposal. A proposal at the Cleveland Museum of Art could be incredibly personal. Stroll the marble halls of the museum and enjoy the museum’s art, while you enjoy the company of your personal work of art. Find a favorite piece of art or a quiet gallery and make your moment truly special. Other cultural institutions like the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Music Center or the Cleveland Public Library (especially the Main Branch with its stunning architecture) could also provide a sophisticated and meaningful setting.

We love the Museum of Art for a few reasons but one is that you can come back to the place that shares meaning over and over again, and share an important piece of history together, that is now part of your history. Many couples will even incorporate the gallery inspiration into their wedding day to provide special meaning throughout their wedding experience. We love this setting for a truly intimate proposal experience. It’s important when choosing a place to really think about how included your partner would like friends, family, and bystanders. We think this location is best suited for just the two of you.

Urban Art with Artist in Ohio City

2. Urban Art in Ohio City

For a more urban and edgy vibe, consider one of the many vibrant graffiti walls and murals in Ohio City. This is perfect for couples who appreciate street art and want a proposal that reflects their modern and artistic tastes. It’s also a really fun way to incorporate something really fun into your proposal without it seeming ‘too obvious’. Lets the vibrant, colorful walls be an inspiration for the colorful life you are building together.

Murals can be found throughout Ohio City, including along the Shoreway, up and down West 25th Street, and at the corner of Church and State streets. Find your favorite mural and create a new favorite memory with your special someone. Create a scavenger hunt for the two of you and when you get to your favorite spot, you can pop the question and they'll never suspect a thing.

In these locations, we always recommend planning for the weather as you never know what to expect here in Cleveland. If you are set on the location, make sure you bring an umbrella big enough for the both of you and a warm, dry blanket afterwards to keep your lover warm and dry after the proposal. Also, consider assigning a friend or hire a photographer to hide to record or photograph such a special and memorable moment in an instagrammable space.

Cleveland Script Sign for your proposal near the Rock Hall.

3. The Cleveland Script Signs

The iconic Cleveland Script Signs located throughout the city offer a fun and recognizable backdrop for a proposal, especially if you and your partner love showing off your Cleveland pride. Sprinkled throughout the city, the script signs offer stunning views of the skyline, lake, and the Cuyahoga River. The script signs create a casual yet memorable spot that captures the spirit of the city.

One of our favorite locations for the Script signs is The Foundry Rowing Club. The sign sits right on the water and there is a really cool Airbnb nearby that is run by The Foundry. If you are coming in from out of town or just want to make it a special night, you could plan to stay overnight as well.

We additionally favor the Tremont location as it overlooks the city and is close to Dante for dinner, which we highly recommend for a truly amazing culinary experience for the couple who describes themselves as foodies. To top off your day of Cleveland pride, you could stop by the Christmas Story House for a tour of one of Cleveland's most iconic film locations, or grab a drink at one of the city's many craft breweries.

Looks Like It’s From a Movie

Propose nearly under the chandelier.

1.  Playhouse Square

The Playhouse Square is known for its amazing plays and shows, and also for its super cool and iconic chandelier. It doesn’t matter what time of the year you propose, because this location is stunning year-round. The chandelier is 44 feet above Euclid Ave and is the largest outdoor chandelier in North America. Take the opportunity to outshine this landmark location, because your partner won’t be able to stop looking at their new ring.

Stop down for a show, then head out to the square to take in the sights. When the time is right pop the question then head out for a romantic dinner or lodging reservation. The area is full of close lodging and notable restaurants including Cibréo Italian Kitchen.

Public Square. An amazing hub in the center of the city for your urban proposal.

2.  Public Square

This location is in the heart of the city, so no matter what you have planned before or afterwards, the city is at your fingertips. In the summertime, the green gardens around the square are a great reason to visit and picturesque for a romantic proposal. We also love the wintertime to stop by for the Cleveland Foundation Ice Skating Rink. It’s such a fun way to spend the day, and additionally, provide a memorable proposal during the most popular season to get engaged.

Year round the square is also part of Illuminate CLE, where the cityscape dances with synchronized lights, motion, and sound. The lightshow takes place every night from dusk to 11pm. It’s great for a walk after dinner at Fahrenheit then head on over for the lightshow. Little does your partner know this is where you are planning on asking the forever question. You could choose to propose right as the light show starts, getting down on one knee right before the lights brighten and illuminate the buildings that surround you. We do suggest visiting prior to your proposal experience to ensure the music that coordinates with the lights is the right mood for you two.

A proposal at the Hungarian Cultural Garden in Cleveland.

3.  Cultural Gardens

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are an iconic location in the city. Located on the East side of Cleveland, there are more than 40 gardens that represent cultures and locations from all over the world. If you have a strong family heritage or want to pay homage to your ancestors while popping the question, this place is it. Many of the gardens are picturesque and have wonderful representations of important contributors to different cultures. Even without a cultural connection to the garden, the countless picturesque gardens provide the perfect backdrop for your proposal.

Our favorites are the Italian Gardens and the Hungarian Gardens. Both of these gardens offer beautiful fountains, stone staircases and many places to pop in for a truly romantic setting. Even if the weather turns bad, this location has the perfect Plan B. We recommend heading over to Rockefeller Parks and Greenhouse for an amazing experience that you wouldn’t expect. The Greenhouse also does take reservations for photoshoots and it’s highly recommended for epic photography for proposal, engagement or wedding photos.

For The Kids At Heart

The Merry Go Round from Euclid Beach Park. Doesn't this look like fun?

1.    The Merry Go Round at Western Reserve Historical Society

Holy cow this place is cool! If you are looking for a bit of whimsy to add to your proposal, this is definitely a cool place to check out. The Merry Go Round used to be at Euclid Beach Park but is now preserved (and functional for rides) at The Western Reserve Historical Society.

Visit the museum for the Cleveland Starts Here exhibit and causally stroll over to your nostalgic proposal spot. Combine the past and present and create a great and unique memory to share with one another on one of Cleveland's most nostalgic rides.

After popping the question here, you are close to tons of restaurants and bars in Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood. Grab a slice of pizza at Mama Santa’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, grab a sweet treat at Presti’s Bakery and Cafe, or sit down for an authentic Italian meal at Trattoria. No matter where you go, you are sure to be treated to some delicious food and a great atmosphere.

Sign at Cleveland Zoo

2.    Cleveland Zoo

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo offers a truly wild setting for your proposal, perfect for the couple who loves animals! Imagine getting down on one knee next to the adorable red pandas, surrounded by the majestic creatures of the African Savanna, or even among the big cats and fish in the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building. The zoo provides a fun, playful, and totally unexpected backdrop for asking the biggest question of your life. Plus, you’ll have plenty of witnesses—from giraffes to gorillas—to cheer you on! After the "yes," you can celebrate with a silly photo-op with your favorite animal exhibit, making the start of your engagement story as unique and joyful as your love.

For an added touch, consider planning an animal encounter to let your partner get up close and personal with their favorite animal. From feeding the giraffes, vising the outback aviary, or going on a behind the scenes tour, you are sure to have a wild time if you propose at the Zoo.

View of Cedar Point

3.    Cedar Point

We cheated a little on this one but how can you pass this up for a epic proposal when it's so near Cleveland. For the ultimate thrill seeking couple, proposing at Cedar Point offers an unparalleled blend of adrenaline and romance. Dubbed the "Roller Coaster Capital of the World," this amusement park provides a high-energy, memorable setting far from a typical quiet dinner proposal. Imagine getting down on one knee right before cresting the summit of your partner's favorite coaster, or perhaps celebrating your engagement with a rush on the Millennium Force or Steel Vengeance. Cedar Point is perfect for couples whose love is as exciting and adventurous as a ride on a world-class roller coaster, turning the biggest question of your life into the ultimate thrill. Here, you can prepare for the thrill of a lifetime with the love of your life.

Tips for a Perfect Cleveland Proposal

·         Consider the Season: Cleveland offers different charms throughout the year. Spring and summer boast lush greenery and outdoor opportunities, while fall provides stunning foliage, and winter can offer a magical, snowy backdrop. Remember that Cleveland weather can be unpredictable and make sure you have a Plan B if you are aiming for an outdoor proposal - either an indoor location or waiting for a day when the weather cooperates with your vision.

·         Capture the Moment: Hire a hidden photographer or videographer to discreetly capture the proposal. If you are looking to cut back on costs, you can even have a friend hide near your proposal destination to capture the moment. These moments are fleeting, and you'll cherish the memories for a lifetime. You won’t regret capturing the emotions that come with a surprise proposal.

·         Personalize It: No matter the location, add personal touches that reflect your relationship. This could be a special song, a letter, or incorporating inside jokes. You might also want to plan a surprise engagement party with your partner’s closest friends and family to celebrate and pop champagne after you pop the question.

·         Plan Ahead: Many venues require reservations or special arrangements for proposals and professional photography. Always call ahead to ensure everything runs smoothly.

No matter where you choose to propose in Cleveland, the most important thing is the love you share. Choose a spot that resonates with both of you, and get ready to embark on your next great adventure together!
